OLD WEST ANGST

Giddyup, partner.  This week, Charlie Barker sends us back to those thrilling days of yesteryear.  To the times when the lawless frontier ran amok.  Back to the days when the west was truly wild.

The first tale in the trio is called A MITE PECKISH.  It’s about a lonely, dusty dried up old town where the local watering hole is just the only place to congregate.  It also draws in someone who just may not be there for the company or the drinks.  In FEVER DREAMS, a young boy has a strange connection to a girl in frontier America.  One that may not be so healthy.  Thirdly, it’s a true story about an old west bandit who became more of a legend after he died than while he was alive.  It is part of the “States of Fear” sub-series and takes place in Oklahoma.  It is entitled WANTED DEAD, NOT ALIVE.

On Thursday, we will return to the 21st century (for the most part) as we examine some famous myths and legends.  All three will be part of the “States of Fear” and feature totally true tales of local lore.  Join Char in the Circus of the Unknown.

DEAD OF NIGHT

Under cloak of night, creatures come out to feed.  Stay close to the tent or you may fall prey to such monsters.  The sideshow offers refuge for lost travelers of the night.

This time around, Char tells of nocturnal creatures and legends.  First is the tale of a Chinese vampire legend.  A creature that has its own set of powers and limitations makes its mark in Chinatown in the story NIGHT OF THE JIANGSHI.  Second, we have a ghost train legend in THE WRECK OF THE RIVERMOUTH EXPRESS.  Last up is the short horror story SPRING-HEELED JACK AND SON, where you get two legends for the price of one.

The daylight is mere hours away.  If you can make it that long, you might as well come back next week for three more tales in the tent.  Char will be there either way.  Why not keep him company?

CURSES, FOILED AGAIN!

Char is no stranger to curses.  What else would explain the way his sideshow went up in flames and trapped him inside?  Luckily, he is somewhat of a curse himself as his apparition continues to appear to tell terrifying tales.

Take, for example, the three horror stories today.  All deal with curses of their own.  First, an artist passes a curse along to his patrons in STILL LIFE AND DEATH.  Secondly, in the days when tuberculosis was incurable, a couple of men hit it big in business.  One of them, however, just wants to succeed on his own in THE GRAVESTONE CUTTER’S APPRENTICE.  And then, a woman just wants some peace and solitude in her THE CLAWFOOT BATHTUB, but keeps seeing visions of murder every time she tries to soak in the suds.

Thank you for continuing to come through the flaps of the sideshow.  Charlie Barker appreciates it.  He keeps a treasure trove of tales just for you.  Come again.

POST APOCALYPSO

It’s the end of the world as we know it.  Charlie Barker examines what could be or will be in three tales of the end of times.  The apocalypse arrives at the circus today.  What happens in the post apocalyptic nightmare that follows?

In THE BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH EVENT, a subterranean baseball player warms up to pitch as the world unravels.  Next,  THE POST-APOCALYPTIC PSYCHIATRIST offers to help a young woman who fears the end of the world.  Finally, it’s a great BIRTHDAY SURPRISE as the last man on earth gets a birthday balloon bouquet.  Now, who was left to send it?

If we’re still around on Thursday, come back to visit the sideshow yet again.  Char has some more he want to show you in the Circus of the Unknown.  Or don’t.  It’s not like the world is going to end if you don’t.  Or will it?
